Having lived on the East Coast my entire life, I must say that I've always had a fascination with the Midwest. It s known as "middle America," and focuses on those "Midwestern values." But what does that mean? Knowing that NRPA's Congress and Exposition is being held in Indianapolis, Ind., this year I was determined to find out.

I first talked to my friend from the Midwest, who said midwesterners are known to be friendly people. Well, that was obvious to anyone who has seen how hard the city of Indianapolis has worked to welcome NRPA members to Congress.

Someone else said Midwesterners love sports--that was also easy to see, as the city is home to reigning Superbowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, and one of the most famous races in the world, the Indy 500.

And then another colleague told me that Hoosiers are notorious for their love of culture and their big ideas. With Indianapolis being home of some of the best museums in the country and some amazing parks, I could easily believe that. …
