HISTORY

A Retro Retreat

Although it may be called a square, perhaps its name should be Fountain with Flair--the area is known for its funky charm and offbeat community of specialty shops, arts and crafts, and unique architecture.

The area was once known for its theaters, and was the premier place to catch a show from 1910 to 1950, with more operating theaters than anywhere else in Indy. The Fountain Square Theater was closed in the 1950s, but was recently restored to its former splendor for all to enjoy.

Now, rather than theater, Fountain Square is known to residents as the place to step back in time, with its retro cool attitude. You can grab a malt at the 50s-style Fountain Diner or hit some pins in the restored duckpin bowling alley.

The area, although in economic decline in the 1970s, is now on the rise, providing a community full of vibrant activity. During the next few years, Indianapolis plans to invest more than $1 million into the area, restoring the fountain, creating a new plaza and updating lighting, the curbs and sidewalks.
