Concerned about their property and senior tenants, Wesley-Highland Towers' management last year requested that the Memphis Area Neighborhood Watch help organize a neighborhood watch and conduct a seminar on crime prevention for its residents. Within three months, the MANW office developed nine Senior Watches throughout the Memphis community while helping each group apply for up to $5,000 through the Matching Grants program. At present, MANW is looking for funding to hire a senior watch coordinator and will soon host a senior self-defense class at Lutheran Village, a Senior Watch site located in the Raleigh/Northeast Memphis area. Other sites for the Senior Watch initiative include Barry Homes (part of Lauderdale Courts), Highland Meadows (Raleigh), Luther Terrace (Raleigh), Memphis Towers (downtown), Union Avenue Baptist Church Highrise (downtown), Wesley Highland (The University of Memphis area), Wesley Madison (downtown), Graceland Gardens (Whitehaven), and Bethel Towers (Whitehaven).

Youth Watch is a newly established project that uses the resources of capable young people to help the MANW work more effectively in Memphis and Shelby County. Future projects will include establishing a traveling drama troop to portray subjects like date rape, anger management, drug abuse, and volunteerism and forming a Youth Crime Commission with representatives from Memphis and Shelby County. MANW is currently seeking funds to expand its youth services.

As a part of a collaborative effort, Memphis City Schools asked MANW to coordinate its Youth Symposium on Oct. 24, 1998, an all-day workshop designed to unite and involve youth, educators, parents, and the community in fighting crime and creating young leaders. …
