The end of September saw the opening of the VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art, an ambitious new public gallery in Carlow, 60 miles south west of Dublin. The new venue, which also hosts the 300-seat George Bernard Shaw Theatre, stands in the grounds of St Patrick's College, which donated the land for the venue. Designed by Terry Pawson Architects, the 18m [euro] building is over 3,000sqm in size and contains several gallery spaces, some of which have 15m-high ceilings. The venue launched with a varied programme of exhibitions, including a show of Irish minimalist painting, a project by Polly Apfelbaum, a new commission by Daphne Wright, a live art series curated by Amanda Coogan, and ancillary shows by Ciaran Walsh, Tadhg McSweeney and Joseph Albers. The visual art programme is curated by the gallery's director, Carissa Farrell. www.visualcarlow.ie

Fermynwoods Contemporary Art (FCA), the Northamptonshire not-for-profit organisation, leaves its Water Tower home in Kettering this month and will go all urban by presenting interventions in Corby town centre. Taking advantage of the recession-time vogue for utilising empty shops, FCA is working with the vast Land Securities property company to identify and take temporary control of retail units. FCA is not giving up its rural roots entirely, however; it retains its recently opened Fermynwoods Offsite venue at Sudborough Green Lodge in Fermyn Woods. www.fermynwoods.co.uk

The multi-disciplinary organisation, whose emphasis is on the arts in general rather than visual art specifically, will use the Grade II listed Chalkwell Hall building as its headquarters. The former manor house's wood-burning stove will no doubt play a crucial role in the organisation's series of 'artist-led dinner discussions'. www.metalculture.com
