SciNet Delivers Network-Ready Cluster-Jukeboxes

Article excerpt

SciNet, Inc., has announced the DiscJockey family, a line of network-ready cluster-jukeboxes. According to the company, the DiscJockey family offers better price/performance ratios than either the traditional CD-ROM server or the standard jukebox system. The SciNet DiscJockey cluster-jukeboxes are network-attached storage devices composed of transparent arrays of high-performance disc changers housed in single or multiple enclosures. By providing the high-disc capacity of a standard jukebox while adding the unique distinction of either a 4-to-1 or 5-to-1 ratio of platters to readers, the result is overall network performance that far exceeds that of other jukebox solutions that use one reader for every 25 to 50 discs.

"With so many users needing access to so much data, SciNet saw the need for a new type of network-attached storage device to serve as a near online storage device that complements existing online and archival systems," said Joe Mendolia, SciNet's vice president of sales and marketing. "So, we pioneered the concept of a network-ready cluster-jukebox last November with the shipment of some of these new devices to early customers who found that they had the right price/performance ratio to meet their storage needs. Because of the popularity of these devices, we decided to market an entire line of network-ready cluster-jukeboxes called the DiscJockey family of products."

According to John Roberts, senior English teacher at Malta Public School in Malta, Montana, "Being an English teacher, as well as having inherited the role of maintaining our Novell network, I just didn't have the time to fiddle around with complicated devices or with mounting CDs at all 150 workstations in the school. With DiscJockey, students have access to the information they need, when they need it, from our large library of CDs. The mount time is negligible, and, in terms of initial installation, SciNet's slogan was accurate: I just plugged it in and turned it on. DiscJockey has been a real time-saver for us-and the easiest and best solution for our budget."

Designed for reliability, flexibility, and scalability, DiscJockeys utilize changers in both standard and hot-swappable configurations and can be housed along with individual disc readers in the same enclosure. …
