Bullying Prevention Program Shows Positive Effects

Pennsylvania is leading the way in bullying prevention and education. A statewide study on bullying prevention programs shows schools that have implemented them have had fewer reports of bullying as well as increased awareness in positive bystander behavior, which has been shown to be an important factor in reducing bullying.

Dr. Gerald Zahorchak, Pennsylvania's secretary of education, stated in a 9/16/09 press release that "Pennsylvania is being viewed as a national model for creating changes in school culture thanks to the partnerships that have been developed between public and private organizations in our schools." One of these partnerships is with the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP).

The OBPP is run through Clemson University, and is a comprehensive, school-wide program for elementary, middle and junior high schools. The program has been found to reduce existing bullying problems among students and prevent new ones, as well as improve peer relations. OBPP is backed by 35 years of research and a great record worldwide.

The OBPP is made possible in more than 200 PA schools by the Hallmark Healthy High 5--HALT! program, whose goal is to promote healthy life-long habits in young people ages 6-18, and the PA CARES (Creating an Atmosphere of Respect and Environment for Success) program. Because of the contributions from these organizations a conclusive study on bullying in high school can be completed. Until now, little bullying research has been done on this student demographic. The study will be finalized this month and the findings revealed in conjunction with the International Bullying Prevention Association's annual conference in Pittsburgh. …
