ROMANS 8:19 SPEAKS of a creation that is groaning "in labor pains" waiting to be set free. It's a fitting image to consider during Advent, as we prepare for and anticipate new life--Emmanuel, God-with-us. We worship a Creator whose presence is closer than our own breath, yet evident in the beauty and magnificence of the earth.

Janet Parker, writing in "Perfect Love Casts Out Fear," calls this the "God-soaked circle of life." Yet the crisis facing our ecological circle of life is dire; the evidence is abundant and mounting--and overwhelming. But being afraid won't get us far, Parker argues. Rather, love--via the concrete choices we make every day to love God and our neighbor--is a far more powerful motivator for action.

In "Priests in God's Garden," James Jones, Anglican bishop of Liverpool, England, calls attention to the theological and biblical vision that should fuel our concern for the environment and the importance of changing the way we view ourselves--from simply being "consumers" of the earth to "stewards. …
