They Want Candy

Article excerpt

OFTEN REFERRED TO AS "GAY CHRISTMAS," Halloween has long been an excuse to dress up and party down in places like Greenwich Village and West Hollywood. But the nation's largest cities don't have a lock on Halloween's gay-friendly gatherings. Case in point: Tampa, Fla.'s Latin district, Ybor City, hosts the debauched Guavaween event the last Saturday of every October-which this year falls on the 31st. Frequented by gays and straights alike and named for west Florida's cash crop, the event is a Mardi Gras-like bacchanalia with live music, costume contests, and the float-filled Stumble Parade, where flashes of body parts are traded for cheap beads. In advance of Guavaween, we stopped by "GaYbor"--the nickname for Ybor's strip of gay bars and clubs-to see how many people would be donning a diamond-studded glove this Halloween.
