San Antonio Mayor Honored with HELO Local Hero Award

NLC's Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) constituency group honored Mayor Julian Castro with its Local Hero Award for his leadership as the new mayor of San Antonio and as the host of this year's NLC Congress of Cities during the conference last month.

Castro, who was elected as mayor in May, was honored during the Joint Constituency Group Reception, co-hosted by HELO, Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) and the Asian Pacific American Municipal Officials (APAMO).

A 35-year-old San Antonio native, Castro is the youngest mayor of a Top 50 American city. In 2001, at the age of 26, Castro became the youngest elected city councilman at the time in San Antonio's history. Throughout his tenure in public service, Castro has championed a vision of economic growth and a top-notch quality of life for all San Antonians.

HELO also had the opportunity to co-sponsor an NLC Leadership Training Institute seminar, "Collaborative Ventures: Building a Vibrant Future in Your Community." Co-sponsored with APAMO, the session covered the approaches that leaders can utilize to boost economic vitality in their municipalities.

In addition to the reception and seminar, HELO members discussed the importance of expanding HELO's membership and building on its strategic plan to strengthen itself as an organization.
