In a tragic story out of Redmond, Oregon, KTVZ.com reports that Karen Hawkins was forced to shoot her ex-husband, Shane, in self-defense when he broke into her home. Karen recalled how Shane had battled depression and mental problems for years. "Even the day he died, he sent me a text message that he had had an X-ray done of his heart, and they found me inside. And I couldn't be removed, or he would die."

Shane's problems contributed to ending their 10-year marriage in August, and ultimately to his death. When Shane contacted Karen on that fateful Wednesday, November 4, he told her he wanted to come over, but she said no. Thinking that he accepted her decision, she went to bed, but Shane came to the house and knocked on the front door. Karen immediately decided she had to do something to defend herself.
