January is a month made for fresh starts. Forget the frustrations or thwarted plans of 2009--we get to begin again at the threshold of 2010 with a clean slate. There's something about living in the West that makes it seem as if anything is possible. I like to think our incredible landscape creates a powerful urge to reinvent ourselves, whether physically or mentally.

My Latest interest inspired by the landscape is rock climbing. Actually, you could call it a renewed interest: As a young girl, I scrambled up granite boulders in the Sierra with my older brother, Sandy, during summer adventures to catch fish or play hide-and-seek. Thirty years later, I found myself using the same muscles and instincts to scramble over red rock in Utah with my teenage daughter on a can yoneering trip (for more about that adventure, see page 38). After we returned home, I revisited again and again the feeling I got when rock climbing, that remembrance of being a young explorer with good coordination and strength.

So this winter, I decided to sign up for rock-climbing classes at a local gym. I was prepared to be the oldest student and possibly the only female, and was surprised to join a class of other 40 something women just like me, all reinventing ourselves as belayers and climbers. …
