It's no coincidence that a group of MPs has chosen this annual 'detox' period to call for tougher restrictions on the way alcohol is promoted in the UK.

The measures being put forward by the Health Select Committee - a ban on pre-watershed TV ads, billboards near schools and promotions on social networking sites - have, understandably, been branded Draconian by drinks marketers. After all, it was only months ago that a coalition of companies invested a record pounds 100m in a push to discourage binge-drinking.

However, rather than taking up their pitchforks in opposition to the committee's report, alcohol brands need to prepare for a much bigger threat.

As we reveal in our cover story, drinks marketers could be facing a total alcohol ad ban unless they take this opportunity to get their houses in order.

Pressure to reduce drink-related deaths and antisocial behaviour is mounting. In light of this, Liberal Democrat MP Sandra Gidley warns that future policy-makers may choose to outlaw the promotion of alcohol. …
