- Why is Simon Clift in the news?

After almost three decades with Unilever, during which time he has become one of the world's most influential marketers, Clift has decided to retire.

The company's first chief marketing officer, who was ranked second in Marketing's Power 100 list last year, oversees brands as diverse as Dove, Lynx, PG Tips and Persil.

A Unilever spokesman has described the exit as an 'amicable parting', prompted by Clift's desire to spend more time with his family in Brazil.

- What's his track record?

Clift was appointed president of marketing in 2001, before rising to the role of chief marketing officer and group vice-president for personal care in 2005. He is also a former chairman of personal care products of Unilever Latin America.

Clift oversaw a huge restructure that led to the company realigning its activity under core messages such as Dove's 'Campaign for real beauty'.

His final act was to conduct a six-month review of Unilever's media agency roster, which concluded last week with MindShare retaining the pounds 700m business for Western Europe. …
