Editor's Comment: COI Deserves Industry Support

The confirmation that the COI was the UK's biggest spending advertiser last year, revealed exclusively in this issue, will come as little surprise to industry-watchers, but it will serve to fuel the political fires ahead of the general election.

High-profile campaigns designed to raise awareness of initiatives such as Change4Life are there to be shot at by critics, who rail against what they perceive as a burden on the taxpayer's wallet and a symptom of a nanny state.

However, supporters point out the need for government to effectively communicate important information to the public, which, arguably, can save lives and money. How else can it do this?

One thing is for sure, the increased sum spent by the COI on behalf of government departments is a tremendous fillip to the marketing industry The trust it places in the skills of marketers, planners, creatives and media buyers is something of which our industry should be proud.
