Partnerships a Hallmark of NRPA: This Year Has Been Full of Partnership Success

As we approach NRPA's 2007 Congress & Exposition later this month and the end of my term as your president, I'm reminded of many exciting things that have occurred since last year. The organization has simplified NRPA governance, invested in new public policy resources and further enhanced education services. M1 of these accomplishments will resonate for years to come, but there is one success story that has had a lasting impact on me while serving the association.

Our ability to partner with likeminded organizations to deliver national public awareness or funds that benefit local park and recreation agencies is unprecedented. Through relationships with national organizations like the National Football League and USA Football, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, the U.S. Tennis Association, Sports Illustrated, and the YMCA of America, NRPA is able to deliver programs that help elevate the benefits of parks and recreation.

Just last month, the driving force behind NRPA Partnerships opened a new chapter in her career. Kathy Spangler, a 20-year employee of NRPA and a lifelong advocate for parks and recreation, embodied the spirit of Claude Ahrens by leaving our association better than she found it. Her vision--building relationships to provide high quality resources that can change our communities--has been realized through her hard work and that of her team. We will surely miss her talent, her skill and her leadership.

An NRPA Partnerships high mark in our history was on display in Atlanta earlier this year. The National Health and Livability Summit was convened in order to advance the role of parks and recreation in making our communities healthier, better places to live. …
