From Sea to Shining Sea: Biking in the Name of Parks and Healthier Families

Make no small plans, famed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham counseled his followers. That's advice a Springfield, Missouri, architect will have taken to heart when he and his family embark on a bicycling trip from Florida to Oregon later this month. What could have been a basic cycling trip in the Springfield area grew into a sophisticated endeavor, complete with sponsors, messaging, and fundraising on behalf of the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. The genesis of the trip lies with Stuart Murr's mother, who. counseled her son not waste opportunities to travel with his family. It was her great regret that her family never traveled while all were young and healthy. Her advice clicked and a grand plan to bike across the country was born.

Stuart's wife, Kate, was instantly on board and has done much of the planning and publicity for the 4,403.2-mile trip that begins in St. Augustine, Florida, and ends in Seaside, Oregon. She says they want their kids to learn first-hand how to work and play creatively, to make healthy and conscious choices, and to interact with people from diverse cultures. "The things you do outside with your family now will make our country healthier and more environmentally conscious in the future," she writes in the Murr family's website. …
