- Why is Heinz in the news?

Heinz has appointed Matt Hill, a senior Unilever executive, as its chief marketing officer. Hill, who currently has the unwieldy-sounding job title of global vice-president, brand development, Knorr Masterbrand & Soups, starts his new job on 23 August.

A statement from Heinz, written in its best marketing jargon, described the hiring as demonstrating its 'strong commitment to driving the brand portfolio forward and putting the consumer at the heart of the company's agenda, while ensuring that the company continues to win both in the short and long term'.

When he gets there, Hill will be in charge of four marketing directors: Giles Jepson, sauces and soups; Paula Jordan, beans, kids and meals; Jane Jeffreys, baby food; and Paul Sternlieb, frozen foods.

- Is Hill's role a new one?

Yes and no. Previously the chief marketing officer position was held by Heinz lifer Suzanne Douglas. However, when she left at the beginning of last year to become managing director of Heinz Australia, confusion reigned over whether the role would be refilled or simply abolished Heinz itself says the role has been 'reinstated'. …
