Fellowship Programs Bring Global Networks to Cities

NLC collaborates with three different partners to deliver a set of global fellowship programs that offer life-changing experiences and an unparalleled opportunity to expand the international network of a city or state.

The fellowship programs are as short as 10 days and as long as three weeks. All of these programs are competitively awarded, with NLC acting to either screen candidates or put forth formal recommendations. Applicants can be city hall professional staff, elected officials or senior staff in state municipal leagues.

The partner organizations include the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the American Council on Germany and the Japan Local Government Center. In all cases, NLC's relationships with these institutions go back more than 10 years.

The American Marshall Memorial Fellowship sponsored by the German Marshall Fund provides an opportunity for young (under age 40) policy and opinion leaders from European countries and the U.S. to gain an in-depth understanding of societies, institutions and people across the Atlantic. During the three-to-four-week traveling program, fellows develop a broad knowledge of political, economic, cultural and social issues in their host countries through meetings with city officials, school teachers, police officers, government officials, business leaders, labor organizers, farmers, activists, religious leaders, academics and members of the community who open their homes to fellows. …
