B.E. Advertising Agencies: An Uphill Battle for Black Agencies

Article excerpt

African American advertising agencies have had a lot to contend with over the years. Even before the economic downturn, competitive pressure from the larger general market agencies and a shift in focus by advertisers to the rapidly growing Latino communities, combined with an overall drop in spending dollars, ensured that any mistake made by black firms could be their last.

As it is, these embattled agencies have had to make drastic changes to survive. Many have branched off into event planning and public relations--two areas that are less lucrative than media buying. Underscoring this, the BE ADVERTISING AGENCIES list was reduced last year from 15 agencies to 10, where it remains.
