Essex County Hospital Center--Institute for Mental Health Policy, Research and Treatment CEDAR GROVE, NJ

Built on an 11-acre sloping site, the new Essex County Hospital Center's Institute for Mental Health Policy, Research and Treatment--a 180-bed acute psychiatric care facility--replaces a turn-of-the-century era healthcare building that, although architecturally striking, had become outdated and technically insufficient, with limited capabilities for accommodating modern psychiatric treatment programs.

To accomplish ECHC's goal to enable all patients to receive appropriate care in a least restrictive environment, the new 151,000 square foot facility introduced a "Matrix Model" of care which is founded on the principle of community re-entry through the creation of a normalizing environment. This means that the experiences patients receive while being treated at the Center will be similar to those encountered once they have returned to their lives outside of the facility. These "real life" experiences will be valuable to both the patients and staff, who will be better able to gauge patients' progress.

The Center is organized around the concept of a healing village--a series of multi-story buildings with specific functions for patient care. …
