On Feb. 23, 1945, five U.S. Marines and a Navy corpsman raised the American flag over Iwo Jima. Three of them would be killed before the Americans secured the island, following some of the fiercest fighting of the Pacific. Last year, in the midst of a downward economic spiral, there weren't many publishing companies offering raises, doling out bonuses and improving healthcare benefits for employees. But that's exactly what entrepreneur Kevin Weiss was doing. He's CEO of Author Solutions, an Indiana-based independent book publishing startup that had $100 million in projected revenue last year. Weiss believes having the right timing and creating a unique business model are keys to entrepreneurial success.

Weiss was president of software company McAfee when he decided to make the jump and take charge of 8-year-old Author Solutions in 2007. He saw there was a growing demand for services to help aspiring authors self-publish, and he knew his timing was right. …
