If you've lived in the West for any time at all, chances are you have a favorite road trip. Driving down Highway 1 from Big Sur to Santa Barbara. Or maybe it's that loop through Yellowstone. Clearly, we have an embarrassment of riches here. Even the backroads are jaw-droppers.

My most memorable road trip was an accident. Several years ago, I was booked to speak at a tourism conference in Valdez, Alaska, traveling by plane through Anchorage. Alaska weather is notoriously unpredictable, and all flights from Anchorage were suddenly canceled due to heavy storms. There were at least 50 of us scrambling to get on buses or rent cars for the 7-hour drive to Valdez. My colleague Dave had a more creative idea: "Let's get an RV to share with others. It'll be fun." So at 4 p.m., armed with a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken and a bottle of white wine for the passengers in the back, we six newly acquainted set out. …
