It hardly seems 10 years since we held the inaugural Opera Canada Awards, but here we are launching the program into its second decade. This year's Rubies are set for Oct. 14 at One King West Hotel in Toronto. As regular readers will know, the Rubies honor outstanding contributions to opera at home and abroad by Canadians on stage and behind the scenes. Over the course of the decade, we've turned the spotlight on 32 honorees, including singers, directors, designers, conductors, teachers, coaches, benefactors and one institution (the CBC). In October, we induct five more distinguished names to the roster.

* Though Saskatoon-born soprano Edith Wiens has spent much of her career in Europe--she lives just outside Munich--she has a far-flung international career. She made her opera debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Donna Anna in 1986, though she's moved freely between opera, concert and recital stages on both sides of the Atlantic and in Asia throughout her career. She's also has an international teaching career. She's on faculty at the Hochschule fur Musik Nurnberg, takes up an appointment at the Juilliard School in New York this fall and next summer is founding Artistic Director of the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie in Neumarkt, Germany. Among the Canadian artists who have studied with Wiens are sopranos Measha Brueggergosman and Martha Guth, tenor Colin Balzer and baritone Tyler Duncan.

* Over the decade of the Rubies, we've recognized duos on a number of occasions, and this year we're honoring Stephen Ralls and Bruce Ubukata for their work as coaches and teachers, collaborative artists and impresarios. Both have pursued individual music and teaching careers, but they've run in close personal tandem and crucially come together in such creative explosions as their Aldeburgh Connection concert series, which features emerging artists. …
