Beneath its boldly designed cover, Asia Beyond Growth explores the rapid urbanisation of what the editors call 'the emerging world'. Flicking through the book, the double-page-spread images of, to take a few examples, children playing with balloons in an urban wasteland, strangely US-style villas in a suburban Chinese context, and busy building sites amid skyscrapers both arrest and provoke. Drawing examples from cities all across Asia, from Mumbai to Dubai to Seoul, the book encourages the reader to discover common threads in the development of Asian cities.

The lustrous images are interspersed with punchy statistics and carefully designed charts about everything from air quality and obesity levels to education levels and slum populations. The combination of facts, figures and photos take this book into great coffee-table territory, but unfortunately the editors didn't stop there.

A whole section is devoted to a series of multiple choice questions, asking the reader to distinguish between different cities from one image: 'Where am I? …
