A Voice for the Planet: Sigourney Weaver Speaks out for an Endangered Earth

For actress Sigourney Weaver, being an environmental activist isn't a PR ploy; it's a way of life.

"My father was a Navy man, and the one requirement he had as I was growing up, in terms of where we lived, is that we had to be within sight of a body of salt water at all times," she told lawmakers at an Earth Day hearing on Capitol Hill. "So I grew up listening to foghorns at night and being chased by crabs by day." Her testimony came on the heels of narrating Acid Test, a documentary about the effect of carbon dioxide on the oceans.

Weaver's passion for the environment is evident in many of her feature films, too. Weaver's role as a feisty botanist working to save a foreign planet in the 2009 blockbuster Avatar all but mirrors her recent real-life involvement in protesting a proposed dam along the Xingu River in the Amazon. …
