This country's biggest free-theatre-ticket bonanza is set for Thursday, Oct. 14. (Or thereabouts--several troupes are giving away free tickets for more than one night; some freebies last an entire month.) Now in its sixth consecutive year, the Free Night of Theater program last year set aside more than 65,000 tickets to more than 2,000 performances at 714 theatre companies from sea to shining sea. The aim: to baptize folks who have never set foot in a particular theatre before.

Officials at North Carolina Theatre Conference, a Free Night managing partner since 2006, say the national initiative has helped its professional and community theatres grow and create new partnerships. In southeastern Michigan, "Theatres are always looking for cool and innovative ways to bring new faces into their facilities," says Donald V. Calamia, executive director of EncoreMichigan.com. Adds Lesley Braden-Phillips, development director of Stagecrafters of Royal Oak, Mich.: "We will offer not one, but two--one free night to encourage new adult patrons, and one night of youth theatre for families who have children with special needs."

It's interesting how the word gets out. Theatre Alliance of Buffalo collaborates every year with the Buffalo Sabres NHL hockey team to send subscribers of Sabres Insider (an e-mail newsletter that reaches more than 100,000 members) tips about how to nab free tickets. San Diego Performing Arts League passes the butt to NUG Magazine (for cannabis connoisseurs), After 55 magazine, local military service groups, local clubs and film festival databases. …
