It is seldom that I have taken a copy of something that I am reviewing into a classroom and created quite the buzz that this resource did. The simple fact that it comes in a box ... yes a box! ... seemed to enthral some of our nine-year-olds from the start. The resource itself is easy to use, durable and attractive ... so what is it?

TTS have created, with Pie Corbett, what is basically a range of 'starter' or game cards that challenge both pupils and teachers to play with words, to take chances, to enjoy language. Having trialled it with a number of classes in school, it does exactly that. Each game can be used in a number of ways--as the basis for a short focussed session with the whole class, planned into a progression of lessons to meet specific objectives or as a stimulus for independent group activities. There is no 'must be used for/must be used in this way' guidance that we have seen so often.

The areas covered by the games are, in fact, quite comprehensive--poetry broadly, simile, metaphor, riddles, alliteration, speed writing and storytelling all appear amongst the themes for 35 games in total. …
