CPO is an important label, not so much for its performances, which are variable, as for the repertoire it chooses. Since the label was founded in 1986, the Osnabruck, Germany-based company has filled many gaps with recordings of rarely performed repertoire such as the operas of Erich Korngold, the operettas of Franz Lehar and the orchestral works of Siegfried Wagner and Hans Pfiztner. Here CPO adds another of music history's one-hit wonders. Carl Zeller (1842-1898) is remembered today almost exclusively for Der Vogelhandler (The Bird Seller, 1891). It endures for such much-recorded pieces as "Ich bin die Christel von der Post," "Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol" and "Wie mein Ahnl zwanzig Jahr," though this recording of his final completed operetta may enhance his reputation.


Der Obersteiger (The Foreman, 1894) is, to be sure, an obscure score, though operetta fans will be familiar with at least one number--the foreman's gentle waltz, "Sei nicht bos" ("Don't be angry"), which is a favorite of sopranos and tenors alike. …
