Thanksgiving stirs up an appetite for nostalgia. But here in the West, where breaking with tradition is encouraged, we take our nostalgia with a twist. Vegetarian menus. Chile-spiked turkey. Soy-milk pumpkin pie.

This issue, we're heading to the beach for the big meal, tagging along with photographer Shelly Strazis and her family (page 64). When I first heard about Shelly's Thanksgiving ritual, I thought it sounded like way too much work. Hauling everything where? What about sand in the mashed potatoes? But when I finally saw the photos, I was struck by how special all of her guests must feel. To share such comforting food together in a spectacular location, to be reminded of how truly blessed we are to live in such a place--no wonder they do it year after year. And the work? No one seems to mind--it's Thanksgiving.

There's something kind of intoxicating about spending that extra time, going to extra effort, to create a meal to share with those you love. …
