The Camino is an opportunity to achieve the thoughtful rhythm of life in meditation, perhaps amplified by the fact that it has been a pilgrimage walk for well over a thousand years, long before its modern incarnation. We bent to the effort knowing that thousands and tens of thousands had done so before us on exactly those trails, over exactly that terrain, under exactly those stag. We engaged the journey on a simple human scale, as close to the ground as it is possible to be--on foot. We walked across mountains; we walked through unimaginably magnificent bouquets of spring flowers amid a cacophony of singing birds; we walked over rocky fiver beds and sloshed through kilometres of rain-drenched mud; we walked through moss-covered forests and along sun-baked fields; we walked back into centuries of history--some, to be sure, of which the world should not be proud; we walked in the company of others while simultaneously in pure solitude. …
