The First Issue under Afif Ben Yedder

Article excerpt

New African Development is at once a continuation and a beginning. It is a continuation of a team effort started 10 years ago which made African Development a successful international publication. Within Africa, it is respected for its objectivity, its independence and high editorial quality. Outside Africa, it has gained the reputation of a serious economic and business publication, which is essential reading for those who wish to keep in touch with events in Africa.

The success of African Development can be measured also in commercial terms. In 1976, the number of advertising pages reached an all-time high of 724, of which 305 pages came from Africa. With 660 editorial pages, a total of 1,384 pages was printed last year, giving an average of 116 pages per issue. The circulation climbed to 13,036 in the first half of 1976 (figure certified by the London Audit Bureau of Circulation) and has continued to increase since then. This outstanding performance resulted in a takeover battle for the magazine between two international publishers, one from America and one from Africa. The staff and the shareholders gave their support unanimously to the offer made by International Communications (IC), an African company which publishes magazines and books for Africa and the Middle East. The transfer of ownership of African Development takes effect from this issue. Oliver Carruthers, who was the majority shareholder, publisher, and the driving force behind the magazine and who has vast experience in international publishing, stays as a consultant.
