Practical Strategies Can Help Municipal Leaders Become CEOs of Economic Development

Municipal leaders have a role to play in the economic development of their cities, towns and villages. Part of that role includes understanding what resources they have at their disposal to help expand and attract businesses and jobs.

During an upcoming workshop at the 2010 Congress of Cities & Exposition, Barry Bluestone, director of the Dukakis Center and Dean of the School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Northeastern University, along with elected officials and NLC representatives, will be discussing critical factors, from municipal process to access to markets, that determine a community's capacity to meet its economic goals.

"We have traveled the country meeting with local officials and have found that most are surprised to learn about those community features that the private sector actually cares about," Bluestone said. "In many cases, they simply are not what local officials expect. During this enlightening, hands-on workshop, my hope is that participants will leave with a better understanding of these factors and the role they can play as 'CEO for Economic Development.'"

Participants in the Practical Strategies to Attract and Retain Economic Investment workshop on December 3 at the 2010 NLC Congress of Cities & Exposition will learn how to assess their local economic conditions and practical strategies to turn "deal breakers" into economic development "deal makers."

Bluestone and Dukakis Center staff will lead attendees on a test drive of the Economic Development Self-Assessment Tool (EDSAT) to evaluate and interpret their jurisdiction's characteristics and processes that are directly linked to the factors most affecting local investment. …
