Loveridge Reflects on Year as NLC President

NLC 2010 President Ronald O. Loveridge shared what he called "The Good, The Bad and The Great Reset" as he looked back on his presidency during a general session at the 2010 Congress of Cities & Exposition in Denver.

Loveridge described a year of ups--such as strong policy initiatives, international prominence and a good relationship with the White House--and downs for the nation's cities--such as tough financial situations for government at all levels and high unemployment rates.

"Resets" usher in a whole new way of life, according to author Richard Florida. Loveridge, quoting Florida, said, "Great resets are broad and fundamental transformations of the economic and social order..."

Loveridge called for cities to work together, share ideas and look to each other to solve problems as regions.

"At this difficult time in the history of American cities and towns, we can learn a great deal from each other," he said. "The exchange of ideas and sharing experiences at this Congress of Cities in Denver can identify new directions, for how we can encourage economic growth, take advantage of the Great Reset and invent a winning future."

Looking to the future, Loveridge welcomed conference participants to the "new politics of scarcity" and the stories cities will have to tell to maintain funding from the state and federal governments.

"At the Congressional level in 2011 we will be playing defense, for cuts rather than new programs will be on the legislative agenda," he said. …
