Just when you thought the ebook market couldn't get any more crowded, another familiar face is entering the space.

In December, Google opened the digital doors of its Google eBookstore and accompanying Google eBooks app, a full-featured digital bookstore that the Mountain View, Calif.-based search giant reports contained 3 million ebooks at launch. According to Google, the majority of the titles in the store are free public domain works, with about 200,000 titles available for purchase. The Google eBookstore is already available in the U.S., and it is expected to launch in Europe in early 2011.

Many aspects of Google's store mirror the offerings of Amazon, Apple, and Barnes & Noble. The eBookstore comes bundled with familiar features such as mobile apps for a variety of platforms, a web-based reader, and the ability for readers to pick up where they left off regardless of what device is used to access the store. But the partnership with the American Booksellers Association is different: That agreement will let independent bookstores sell Google eBook editions through an ecommerce website. …
