Expert System: Strategic Search

Article excerpt

In Italy, Expert System S.p.A. made a name for itself in the mid-1900s as a pioneer in linguistics before branching out into semantic search and discovery, and the company has kept the innovations coming.

Luca Scagliarini, partner and vice president of strategy and business development, points to the company's full line of semantic search and discovery tools as proof of a mature technology with staying power. The latest offering in its product line is Cogito Focus, a semantic indexing search-and-analysis tool that can manage internal and external information for the enterprise market.

"The core technology was introduced to the market internationally about 4 years ago," says Scagliarini. "Cogito is the software that understands the meaning of words," he says. "It's a system that works with our day-today language. So when I type in the sentence, 'My car eats gas when I step on the gas,' the system automatically understands the linguistic differences between gasoline and a gas pedal. It understands the words." By understanding the meaning in context, the system simplifies access to content and reduces overall search time, he says. It also understands the keywords in relation to each other, playing off the concepts of car, automobile, hatchback, and Fiat.
