Tesco has hit the headlines for moving into the controversial cash-for-gold market with the website

The service was soft-launched late last year, but has attracted press attention for offering to pay considerably higher prices than other cash-for-gold services and causing a fall in the share price of high-street pawnbrokers.

Tesco's service works in the same way as its competitors'. Customers request a postage-paid bag, fill it will their bling, send it away and wait for the money to arrive.

- What's the problem?

Cash-for-gold schemes have been heavily criticised for taking advantage of hard-up consumers with little or no choice but to accept paltry sums for their gold. The precious metal has been the most robust commodity through the recession, rising in value by 25% during 2010.

The Office of Fair Trading launched an investigation into five cash-for-gold companies in January 2010 in an effort to clamp down on unscrupulous operators. …
