Product controller roles are popular with recently qualified accountants, mainly because they often provide a first step into investment banking and provide an excellent grounding for a career in the industry. The role requires you to deal with the bank's front office and its risk and valuation units, giving you a real insight into the organisation's daily operations. Your key interactions will typically be with the bank's traders, including the head of the trading desk; the central product control team; the middle office; and the operations and technology divisions. Your activities will include daily, weekly and monthly reports, various projects and work on specific ad-hoc queries.

The product control function is particularly important to the banks at the moment, as they seek to mitigate their risks, so the availability of jobs in this area has increased. But along with this comes strong competition for the best ones. Employers' requirements are exacting, so CIMA professionals will need to work hard to secure their preferred roles.

Banks will typically consider a wide range of accountants, but the fact that CIMA professionals tend to have more hands-on experience can work to your advantage. For the more junior roles, recruiters tend to focus on an applicant's understanding of the industry, motivation for securing a product control job and teamworking skills, as well as their product knowledge.
