My grown-up version of a candy store is any kind of cookware shop. I love to browse the aisles, and I've been known to lose all track of time deliberating between crepe pans and muffin tins. The people-watching is equally mesmerizing and, in my line of work, informative. Just yesterday, in fact, I noticed several men in a new section of my favorite urban gourmet store ... were they looking at barbecue tools? knives? No. Canning supplies. I overheard questions about jams and pickles as if we were at a state fair. Seems even the hipsters are into making preserves from the garden these days.

Jam making, artisanal jam, and what we like to call the "jam explosion" is the kind of surprising trend we highlight in this month's Sunset 100 list (page 15). It's a collection of ideas, foods, places, and movements that are catching on and shaping the West in 2011.
