EIina Garanca made her Met debut as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia in 2008. La cenerentola followed a year later. Yet she does not consider herself a Rossini singer. "It's a challenge for me to make those little notes run," she has said. "I feel that my voice wants to have longer lines and legato rather than quick runs, so this Cenerentola may be one of my last roles in Rossini repertory." What a pity that would be. Although her coloratura may not be as finely etched as that of Cecilia Bartoli or Joyce Di Donato, she holds her own--in large part thanks to enviable acting skills.

American Tenor Lawrence Brownlee, on the other hand, is clearly a Rossini singer. His vocal agility and the freedom of his top notes put him in the top rank.
