TANF Administrators Association Welcomes New Chairperson

The National Association of State TANF Administrators is pleased to welcome Paul Lefkowitz as its newest chairperson, succeeding former NASTA Chairperson Russell Sykes, as of Jan. 1, 2011. Lefkowitz is the Family Assistance Policy director with the Tennessee Department of Human Services and has policy responsibilities for TANF, SNAP, Medicaid eligibility and child care assistance. Lefkowitz's career is a reflection of service; he started out as an eligibility counselor after graduating Vanderbilt University and moved on to working with the Tennessee DHS state office in 2002. He received his Masters in Public Policy from Tufts University.

Lefkowitz takes over as chair of NASTA after serving as affiliate vice chair. When asked about his thoughts on taking over the leadership role for the TANF administrators he was very optimistic about both the direction of the affiliate and the possibility for change going forward. "I'm very excited to be able to chair NASTA at what is certainly a pivotal time for all TANF administrators," said Lefkowitz, "all of the challenges that we've been dealing with since the start of the recession have really underscored the importance of the TANF program's flexibility and have really brought awareness to the hurdles faced by our program, our staff and the clients we serve. …
