Facilities: The town operates an ocean-front sailing center. 212 acres of parkland nine ocean beaches, four freshwater beaches. one year-round activity center four ballfield diamonds three quadrangle fields five outdoor basketball courts, and eight tennis courts.

Programs: Programs include adult aquatic exercise, open swim, swimming and lifeguard training, winter Pilates, instructional and competitive saltwater sailing, preschool and school-aged summer adventure programs, youth sports leagues (basketball, baseball, and softball), community special events and holiday celebrations, administration of all field use, picnic rentals, and weddings.

Challenges & Issues: Lack of local year-round employment opportunities has resulted in a decrease in the school-age population by 27 percent over the past three years. Year-round population of 23,800 expands to 58,000 May through September--and drops to 18,000 December through April. These significant fluctuations make it difficult to recruit and retain quality seasonal staff. Lack of state legislation allowing local taxing authority for park and recreation funding has resulted in relying on new revenue streams m a depressed economy to balance strained budgets. …
