There's something about fire. Whether you are a child who has to be told not to play with matches or an adult mesmerized by roaring logs at a campsite, fire is fascinating. It doesn't even have to be a real fire. Remember the Yule Log on television? It seems strange now, but I actually used to look forward to seeing that endless loop of a burning fireplace every holiday season. And obviously I wasn't alone in my appreciation because the Yule Log used to play every year for 24 hours straight. Imagine that kind of programming in today's hypercompetitive television market.

But such is the appeal of fire. We're drawn to it despite (or perhaps partly because or') its destructive properties. So needless to say, when I visited FM Global's Research Campus in Rhode Island seven years ago and stood 100 yards from the largest fire I have ever seen, it left a lasting impression.
