This photo essay was extracted from Bonito, a handsome book of photography by Valdir Cruz which was recent[y published by Capivara Editora, with the support of the BNP Paribas Foundation of Brazil. Bonito. in the Serra da Bodoqucna. Mato Grosso do Sul. Brazil. is world famous for the wealth of its biodiversity and was once celebrated on a sixteenth century map as "Brazil's Remotest Frontier.

Louis Bazire, president of the Paribas Foundation, has explained succinctly the objective of the book. Valdir Cruz "documented the natural landscapes, the springs and rivers of the crystal-clear waters. waterfalls, caves carerns, and hills of this region, internationally recognized as one of the best ecotourism destinations of the world and as one of the most beautiful areas in Brazil. He penetrated into the region on various trips in search of a different lighting, capturing images rich in poetry and enchantment."

Cruz's photographic compositions are imaginative and elegant. As Rubens Fernandes Junior observes in the book's preface. "nothing escapes from his attentive gaze. The documentary character that pervades his work does not constitute an obstacle to the expression of feelings and emotions, brought about by the in natura environment of Bonito."
