People are virtually swimming in email these days, navigating a steady stream of incoming and outgoing messages and all those attachments in between. Giving users a way to increase their efficiency without leaving their email client is one of the driving forces behind harmon.ie's software.

Users can now collaborate more frequently and easily through harmon.ie, an email sidebar that connects Microsoft Outlook or IBM Lotus Notes with Microsoft SharePoint or Google Docs. harmon.ie's social email enables users to be more productive and more efficient because they can simply drag, drop, and share documents without leaving their email windows--or their comfort zones. First introduced nearly 2 years ago, harmon.ie keeps its long-term goal in view, says David Lavenda, vice president of marketing. The company wants "to basically make the email window a place where people do a lot of collaboration across multiple products," he says.

Lavenda says no other email sidebar integrations can connect Outlook or Lotus Notes with SharePoint or Google Docs. "The cross-platform capability is one of our unique differentiators," he says. This capability enables harmon.ie to reduce document chaos, avoid drastic changes in workflow, and provide central storage of all files.

Attachments use a tremendous amount of email storage space and often result in multiple drafts of the same document. harmon.ie intercepts email attachments and asks users if they would rather store a document on SharePoint or Google Docs, where it can then be updated with comments and edits in real time. …
