After the Honeymoon: An MTNA Certification Story

I have just passed the one-year anniversary for MTNA certification. I began this journey by asking myself, "What does certification mean to me, to my students, to my colleagues?" In the beginning, I honestly didn't think it would matter to my students. I could see the value it had in relation to my colleagues and also to me as a lifelong learner, but my students just wanted music lessons to be fun and exciting. What I didn't know at the time, however, was that the certification process would lead me on a musical journey that had great potential to widen my view of fun and exciting lessons. 1just had to make the decision to get on the train.

I didn't fit the mold of the typical MTNA applicant. The train was uncomfortable, and it wasn't made for people like me. Like any good musician who is inclined to improvise, I resisted the structure it required. But I had a curiosity about the trip, and I was eager to see new things and to bring back presents for my students, so I finally made the decision to go. …
