ATMA: ACD 22664 Nova Scotian soprano Jane Archibald has established a name for herself in Europe, and is now moving strongly into North America. Zerbinetta in Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos has become a signature role, earning rave reviews in Munich, Paris, Berlin, Baden-Baden and Covent Garden. Archibald made her Canadian Opera Company debut in the role this spring, and returns to Toronto next season in the title role of Handel's Semele.

At one point, Haydn was commissioned to compose an opera for Prague. He turned it down, probably due to his friend Mozart's success there with Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni It's believed that Haydn neither wanted nor needed the comparisons that would naturally be drawn. There's general agreement that his operas lack the dramatic sense, characterization and emotional depth of Mozart's, but still, Haydn was no operatic slouch. He directed more than 100 opera performances a year at Esterhaza, and composed more than 20 operas.
