NEW YORK CITY: Something like consensus seemed to sweep through the city's awards-giving sector in April and May, those months when theatrical prizes become as pluckable as blooming narcissi. The profane but good-hearted Broadway mega-hit The Book of Mormon, which heralded the theatrical debut of "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, won enough kudos to make it odds-on for a best musical Tony (bestowed, if indications hold, on June 12, after this issue has gone to press). The Drama Desk loaded five awards onto Mormon, which was also declared best musical by the Outer Critics Circle, the New York Drama Critics' Circle and the Drama League. Another five Drama Desk prizes went to the slick-as-silk revival of Cole Porter's Anything Goes, which also got nods from the Outer Critics (as best musical and for Sutton Foster's Reno Sweeney).

Non-musical plaudits added up for the celeb-heavy Broadway revival of Larry Kramer's 26-year-old AIDS drama The Normal Heart, handed citations from all three major critics' groups. The clubbier Obie Awards, bestowed by the Village Voice, named Kristoffer Diaz's boxing drama The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity as best new American play, and handed other top citations to the exiled Belarus Free Theatre, Repertorio Espanol's godfather Rene Buch, and a clutch of great actors (including F. Murray Abraham for sustained achievement) and directors (among them Austin Pendleton and Leigh Silverman).

War Horse, the World War I epic from the National Theatre of Britain, was cited for its direction (by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris), design and puppetry (by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company) from several quarters, and dubbed best play on Broadway by the Outer Critics and best overall play by the Drama League. …
