I have eaten a lot of memorable camp food. There have been the lows, like soggy sandwiches (who put the bread at the bottom of the cooler?) and regrettably undercooked chicken (which led to the even more regrettable moment when my daughter got sick in the middle of a crowded tent at midnight). But more often, I've tasted real highs cooked over a campfire: a tri-tip perfectly marinated in Syrah and soy sauce, or decadent homemade cinnamon rolls (made by Ric, who had the most efficient and compact camp kitchen to feed an army of friends).

Like most campers, I'm always on a quest for a better way to pack, a more inventive dish to prepare. Last year, we asked our Facebook fans to tell us what they cook when camping, and the response was deliciously surprising, from bananas Foster to dutch-oven chicken potpie.
