Ask a Librarian is a monthly feature where librarians have a chance to comment on Computers in Libraries' topic of the month. In this installment, we hear from Sandra Stewart, IDEAS (innovation, digital and electronic resources and staff training and development) manager for the San Jose Public Library. She suggests applications of various complexity that can be helpful in engaging library patrons on their mobile devices.

Q: What new media and mobile apps can libraries implement in order to attract patrons and make library access more convenient?

A: There are quite a few options that I would consider trying out, including any of the following suggestions, which I am listing in the order of ease of implementation.

* Register your library site in foursquare and Gowalla. These interactive apps allow customers to tell their friends when they check in at your location. Offer a small promotion for checking in.

* Add your library's bar code to CardStar's list and let your customers know they can use it at your self-check machines. …
