A Story That Mirrors Many

WE ALL HAVE A STORY ABOUT A STUDENT

who achieved much success after completing a career and technical education (CIE) program. A student we knew would find a career pathway and succeed if he or she were given the right motivation and opportunity. I thought I would take advantage of this column and share my favorite student story with you.

Heather was a very good student. She did not get the highest grades in her class, but she was comfortably in the upper 25 percent. A well-rounded student, she enjoyed playing sports and even worked while finishing up her high school hours. College led to a scholarship at a well-respected private university, a little more than a hundred miles away from mom and dad, and she joined a sorority and enjoyed the college life. Good fortune did not always smile on her; her brother was diagnosed with cancer, and she and her two younger brothers were devastated.

As her brother fought his battle, eventually passing away, Heather's education suffered. After a year and a half, she left the sorority and transferred to the state university. After dropping out, she started looking for an area of study that she was interested in, and she focused on health care. She first got a job at the local hospital as an orderly; then she discovered the EMT basic program at the local CTE center. After that she was hooked! She next enrolled in the EMT intermediate program at (he same career tech center, and then took a job as an EMT with a local ambulance service. …
